ASCE 7-22 Minimum Design Loads for Florida Structures

The Florida Building Code (FBC 8th Edition, 2023/2026 update) mandates that all aperture design pressures must be calculated in strict accordance with ASCE 7-22 Chapter 26–30.

The Velocity Pressure Equation ($q_z$)

Our in-house engineering team calculates localized wind pressure using the fundamental velocity pressure formula:

q_z = 0.00256 * K_z * K_zt * K_d * K_e * V^2

Where:
• $V$ = Ultimate Design Wind Speed (155 to 185 MPH)
• $K_z$ = Velocity Pressure Exposure Coefficient (Height & Exposure)
• $K_{zt}$ = Topographic Factor (Canal embankments & coastal bluffs)
• $K_d$ = Wind Directionality Factor (0.85 for Buildings)
• $K_e$ = Ground Elevation Factor

Exposure Category Breakdown

Exposure B: Urban and suburban areas with closely spaced obstructions (Inland Kendall, Plantation).
Exposure C: Open terrain with scattered obstructions (Open agricultural land, large suburban golf courses).
Exposure D: Flat, unobstructed coastal strips facing water bodies extending 1 mile or more (Palm Beach Island, Miami Beach, Star Island, Key Biscayne).
